Inese Dabola film producer and director of RIBOCA strategic partnerships visit LAB12. Inese made a screening of the Film “And suddenly it all blossoms”, that was developed out of the urgent pursuit for alternative perspectives and propositions to humanity’s obsession for growth, expansion, and consumption.

Sofia Kalvourtzi talked to LAB12 members about DAU, a one of a kind film project, and a reference point, a production that used Role Playing Game in a series of films of epic scale while blending life and fiction.  Dau is a 2019 Russian film of the DAU project organised by Ilya Khrzhanovsky. The film deals with the life of the Nobel Prize-winning Soviet scientist Lev Landau. She also shared her personal experience as she was a member of the production team.

The Politics of Fatness

What do we mean when we envision fat cyborgs? How do fatness, phenomenology and Merleau-Ponty interesect? Why is it important to talk about fatness instead of obesity? YES BUT, WHAT ABOUT YOUR HEALTH? How is the fat body represented in greek culture, and how is that connected with Greece’s position in relation to Europe and the West? What does that mean for the embodied experience of fat feminities in Greece? YES BUT, WHAT ABOUT YOUR HEALTH?

In greek society, fatness is considered a self-evident sign of personal failure, self-evidently bad and self-evidently shameful. The above questions aim to outline the political, social and historical aspects that hide behind these wrong convictions. In this lecture we will explore the ways in which current misconceptions build the fat identity – and how to dismantle them.

Paribartana Mohanty was invited by the duo team of The Text of Appearances (Maria Glyka, Dimitris Rentoumis). They organized a study group of the essay “The carrier bag theory of fiction” by Ursula K. Le Guin in collaboration with Studio 11 asfa (Lab11) and ASFA Studio Poka-Yio (Lab12) of ASFA Paribartana Mohanty for a lecture-performance with the title “Mia Marcos and his art project”.

Artist, choreographer and director Lucie Tumova shared her practice with LAB12 members.

Brett Bailey, a playwright, artist designer, play director, festival curator and the artistic director of the group Third World Bun Fight gave a presentation to LAB12 members 

Hugo Wheeler of the Hot Wheels Projects – a space for a new generation of Greek and Cypriot practitioners alongside international practitioners – with Ella Fleck and Tabitha Steinberg of 650mah – a project space that challenges traditional gallery models by settling itself within a pre-existing business – presented their project spaces, shared important experiences, and made a studio crit to the members of the Lab.

Enterprise Projects is one of the independent art initiatives that make the Athenian art scene so vibrant. Our discussion about the contemporary art creation with the curator and writer Danai Giannoglou and the artist Vasilis Papageorgiou at Lab12 was very inspiring as well as the studio crit that followed.

We had a precious meeting with the accomplished artist Cullen Washington Jr., who shared insights with the Lab12 members as he does with his peers. Warm acknowledgments to the ARCAthens Curatorial Fellow for the support and the visionary work.

The Senior Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit visited our Lab and shared tips and advice about the new art scene which followed by a studio crit about the Lab12 members works.

Our guest visitors from Snehta Residency: Snehta director artist Augustus Veinoglou, curator Myrto Katraki, art historian Margarita Kataga, and the visiting artists Jae Youl Jeoung and Elisabet Birta.

The versatile, inspiring and utterly bombastic The Callas (Lakis & Aris Ionas) shared their strands of their multifaceted work: music, films, artworks, magazines, events, art shows.

The Royal College of Art’s Contemporary Art Practice Department visited ASFA and our Lab. Melanie Jordan, Mel Brimfield, Jeremy Millar, Tai Shani and their students presented the programme and student works and witnessed the presentations of our students.

Cibelle and Coco unpacked their practice and linked gender politics to the political situation in Brazil. 

In her visit at ASFA Lab12, Lauren Wy shared how being born into heavy religion and deep poverty has affected her life path and how by making art she can sublimate the confusion of mere existence. Identity and self-representation were some of the notions related to her body of work we explored.

The Lab12 members explored with Tomoni Sasaki the world of UX design and the Design Thinking principles.

Our first guest multimedia artist Ed Fornieles got across the pillars of his work – how he uses social networks, film, installation and immersive performance to express the social structures and identities that are being constructed and/or reproduced in the digital era.
